Ugo e Olga Levi onlus per gli studi musicali, Venezia, 2014 (978-88-7552-056-4) The village of Premana, the highest village of Valsassina (Lecco, Lombardy in northern Italy), is known for its iron craftsmen and the production of fine knives, scissors and mountain equipment. However, it is also renowned for its peculiar tradition of multipart songs known as Tìir, which explodes forth during certain times of the year. The Tìir is a powerful shouted song in the high range of the voice; while verging on a yell, it is also slow and sustained. The DVD The ethnographic film VOICES FROM THE HEIGHTS: Three days in Premana (Gran Prix Golden Touron, Filmfestival Čadca, 2012) presents the three most significant days for such singing practice in the yearly cycle: Past, Corpus Domini and, The Three Kings. Day One: Past (8^th August): In the mountains above Premana there are twelve alpeggi, settlements in the high meadows where women and children spend their summers herding cattle, milking and producing butter and cheese. At the end of the season, each alpeggio organises a past, a grand collective feast after which the loud singing begins, lasting well into the night. Day Two: Corpus Domini (6^th June): On occasion of the Corpus Domini procession, the entire route through the historic village centre is lined with fresh flowers, banners, flags and other decorations. The procession celebrating the Holy Host is lead by the ancient confreiries delegates singing liturgical hymns. At the end of the procession the decorations are quickly dismantled. Day Three: the Three Kings (5^th January): On the eve of the Epiphany, twenty-year-old men lead a group of singers through the village streets. At each household they stop and lead a traditional alms-begging song, backed by the entire community. On the day of the Epiphany the song of the Tre Re  (the Three Kings) – resounds loud and hign for the last time inside the village parish church. The DVD also contains 17 bonus tracks with the full versions of the songs The BOOK: The book is divided in three parts. The first part is Filming complex polyphony. Notes of visual anthropology, addresses the issues of visual anthropology regarding the making of the film. The second, entitled The three kings of Premana. Historical ethno-musicological notes is devoted to the ethno-musical analysis of “The Three Kings”. The third section From the Three Kings at vespers. • Renato Morelli, Stelle, Gelindi, tre, NOTA, Udine, GEOS CD BOOK 455, 2014(ISBN 9788861631274). The performance of the Stella (Star) multipart carols in northern Italy. This book presents the results of the author’s field research of over thirty years, combined with research at the Vallicelliana library in Rome, the British Library in London, the library of the Bologna Conservatory, and the Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck. The publication has allowed new light to be shed on the central problem facing ethno-musicologists concerned with the Italian Alps, namely the origin of written sources of devotional music. This “cross-over” repertoire between written and oral traditions, the sacred and the profane, popular and learned culture  has largely been spread by oral tradition. Through specific research, it has been possible to identify not only the printed sources, but also the role of priests in the widespread diffusion of this repertoire. Having roots in the Counter-Reformation with the Council of Trent and the various lodi a travestimento spiritual, popular melodies and songs given new text with religious significance, this tradition continued with the work of the Jesuits, Franciscans, and individual priests. This book presents in detail the work of Saint Carlo Borromeo (1538-1584) and Dominican priest Father Serafino Razzi (1531-1613) during the Council of Trent (1545-1563). They directed, for six years, a commission of priests-musicians, to prepare the lodi a travestimento spirituale. This work aimed to counter the spiritual songs in the vernacular of Luther and Calvin.The custom of the Stella is linked instead to the Jesuits as a means of reinforcing the significance of the Epiphany (the visit of the Magi), as challenged by Luther. Don Giambattista Michi (1651-1690), a priest born in Tesero in the Fiemme Valley, the author of a collection of sacred songs of the Stella is fundamental in this collection. The most popular text in the Alps is We are the Three Kings, the author of which remained unknown until recently. In 2011, in Premana, it was finally possible to identify the author of the song, the publisher and the date: priest Isotta Joseph (1732 - 1794), printed by publisher Ostinelli from Como. The first part of the book is philological and historical-ethnographic, and examines the four principal printed sources found from the sixteenth through the eighteenth century. The second part is dedicated to the ethno-musicological analysis of twenty-two songs published on these sources, including seventy-five variants from the Trento region. The CD included with the book contains the complete corpus of the seventy-five variants from the Trento region as recorded by the author

Founded in 1976, the choir was originally composed by men and women who undertook a process of revival of the traditional worksongs - particularly of the female rice workers - under the guidance of Giovanni Parini (a local historian, photographer and director of the carpenters’ cooperative). After 2007 the choir has been composed exclusively by women who have been rice-workers until the ’60 and by their daughters and daughters in law. It has achieved an unexpected notoriety, being invited to take part to different festivals and concerts. The book focuses on a choir of female rice workers in Lavezzola, a village located halfway between the towns of Ravenna and Ferrara. The choir of Lavezzola was established in 1968 by initiative of Maria Bassi, a union organizer, and of a dozen of women agricultural workers who had shared a past as rice workers. It was active until the middle of the 1980s. The book is based on the memories of Ilva Calderoni, a 84-year old woman who has been a member of the choir since its foundation. It examines the history of the choir and its relationship with the CGIL, the left-wing Italian workers Union. Beyond the transcriptions of songs by the choir during its lifetime (political songs, ballads, partisan songs and migration songs) and analyses of its performing style, the book includes a CD with recordings made in the 1970s.
