Journey of Harmony (3 hours, morning of 3 August 2016)

This walk leads you to explore and experience five historical religious sites in the heritage enclave of George Town, namely the Goddess of Mercy Temple, Acheen Street Mosque,  Kapitan Keling Mosque,  Church of St George the Martyr, and Sri Maha Mariamman Temple. Within each religious compound, the residents socialized, obtained spiritual education, and practiced acts of welfare and charity, and found solace. The built and living environment within each compound ensures the continuity of each community’s beliefs, rituals, language, philosophy, aesthetics and values.

Little India and the Spice Trail (2 hours, morning of 3 August 2016)

Spices have been widely used in the cooking of the various ethnic groups in Penang and the rest of Malaysia. The spice trail will introduce participants to  the history of spice trade in Penang, an important port of call for ships since the eighteenth century. Participants can also learn about the various spices and their application in health, food and religious practices by visiting a traditional spice grinding shop, Tropical Spice Garden shop in the city and other spice shops, and the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple  located at Little India.

Transportation

Penang has an international airport that is connected directly to some cities in the region such as Hong Kong and Bangkok.  Most participants will have to fly into Kuala Lumpur and take a connecting flight to Penang (flight time 50 minutes). Besides the national carrier Malaysia Airlines, budget airlines such as Air Asia, Firefly or Malindo Air also fly from Kuala Lumpur to Penang.

Each participant will be responsible for his/her own transportation from the airport to the hotel and to the conference location.  Official taxis from the airport to the city will cost about RM 40.  There are also public buses (RM2-3) from the airport to the city. You can catch the bus outside of the terminal.  Information about buses and taxis from the airport to the city can be obtained at:  http://www.penangairport.com/getting-to-penang-airport/penang-airport-buses.htm.

There are also buses (4-5 hours) or electric trains (3-4 hours) connecting Kuala Lumpur to Penang. For information about the electric train to Penang, see http://www.travel-penang-malaysia.com/ets-train-kl-to-penang.html. Travel time for the electric train is about 3-4 hours. The train stops in Butterworth (mainland), there is ferry service from the train station to the island.
