The 2009 Election of the ICTM Executive Board

Call for Nominations

In October 2008, the Nomination Committee of the 2009 Election requested proposals for nominations to fill positions on the Executive Board that would become vacant at the time of the 39th General Assembly of ICTM Members, to be held during the 40th ICTM World Conference (Durban, South Africa) on 3 July 2009.

The Nomination Committee was formed by Tan Sooi Beng (Malaysia, convener), Tina K. Ramnarine (UK), and Philip Bohlman (USA).

By the time of the General Assembly, Adrienne L. Kaeppler (USA) would complete her term as President; Allan Marett (Australia) and Wim van Zanten (the Netherlands) would complete theirs as Vice Presidents; and Marianne Bröcker (Germany) and Patricia A. Opondo (South Africa) would complete theirs as Ordinary Members. Consequently, the vacant positions to fill in the 2009 election were:

  • 2 Ordinary Members
  • 1 Vice President
  • The President

The following candidates were selected by the Nomination Committee from proposals made by ICTM National Committees and by individual ICTM members (from at least two different countries for each proposal).

According to the existing Rules, Ordinary Members of the Executive Board are elected for a term lasting until the third General Assembly of Members after their term has begun (typically six years), and are eligible for re-election only once. The President and Vice Presidents are elected for a term lasting until the second General Assembly of Members after their term has begun (typically four years), and are eligible for re‐election only once.

Voting procedure

The voting was conducted via postal ballot, and there was also an opportunity to vote in the first few days of the Durban World Conference. 

Results

Out of 519 members who were eligible to vote, 221 took part in the election. Only 171 (33%) valid ballots were valid, as 25 were not in accordance with ICTM Rules.

The results of the election were announced during the 40th General Assembly of ICTM Members, held in Durban on 3 July 2009.
