Mission Statement

The key function of the African Musics Study Group (AMSG) is to research, promote, preserve disseminate and pro- tect African musics and dance in all their aspects, functions and geographi- cal locations, in Africa and in the dias- pora; with a particular emphasis on indigenous/traditional African musics in sub-Saharan and diasporic Africa.

The African Musics Study Group is pleased to invite submissions for its weblog, which, along with the mailing list, serves as a central communication site for members. Any items of interest to members of the Study Group, including conference announcements, calls for abstracts, events, descriptions of research or publications, and similar newsworthy items, can be sent to the webmaster, Alvin Petersen, at alvin.petersen@nwu.ac.za, and/or posted directly to the mailing list (see below).

The International Council for Traditional Music Study Group on African Musics is pleased to announce its Third Symposium on the theme, “Dialogue of African musics and cultures through space and time”. The symposium will be hosted by the Eduardo Mondlane University (Maputo, Mozambique) from 23-26 September, 2020.

The International Council for Traditional Music Study Group on African  Musics is pleased to announce its Second Symposium on the theme,  “African Music Scholarship in the Twenty-first Century: Challenges and Directions.” The symposium will be hosted by the Department of Music, School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana, Legon  August 9 – 12, 2018.  Professor V. Kofi Agawu (Princeton University) will be our special Keynote Speaker for this event.
