Yearbook for Traditional Music - How to Submit Articles for Consideration

Essays offered for publication should represent the author's original research not previously published and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Submissions should be in the hands of the Editor by 1 January of the year in which their publication is anticipated. All submissions will be read by a panel of referees, whose recommendations, along with the availability of space and an essay's agreement with the overall plan for a given issue, determine whether a paper is accepted. Authors are encouraged to send their submissions as early as possible to the General Editor: Mr. Don Niles, Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies, Box 1432, Boroko 111, Papua New Guinea; e-mail ipngs@global.net.pg; Submissions intended for a volume for which a guest editor has been appointed should be sent to that guest editor.

All submissions should be made in hard copy, as well as in a computer file in Word format or Rich Text Format (RTF) sent as an email attachment. Please use Times New Roman, 12-point type, and double-spaced paragraphs. Sub-headings should be bold, left-justified, and on a separate line. The Yearbook uses the author-date system of referencing with a list of References cited at the end of the paper. Footnotes, numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals throughout the paper, may also be used.

Illustrations (photographs, diagrams, music examples, maps, etc.) should be provided in hard copy, as well as in a computer file. The hard copy must have identification (number, brief caption) written in pencil on the reverse side. Computer files of photographs and maps should be supplied in greyscale (not RGB or CMYK) TIFF or JPEG format at 300 dpi when at 100% size. When using a digital camera, to produce a JPEG file, please use the “very high” setting on your camera so that the JPEG file will be at least 300 dpi when reduced to fit in the journal. Diagrams, line drawings, and musical examples should be supplied in black and white bitmap files in TIFF format at 1000 dpi at 100% size. Illustrations pasted into the Word file are also acceptable if they comply with these specifications. If illustrations cannot be provided as computer files, the hard copy should be suitable for scanning and publication. All illustrations should be numbered consecutively in the order of their appearance in the paper and labelled Figures (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc). Music examples and maps may be numbered separately if desired. Please provide captions for illustrations at the end of the paper, and indicate their locations in capital letters (e.g., FIGURE 1 HERE). Tables should be numbered separately. Consult recent issues of the Yearbook for further details.

Submissions must be in English. All manuscripts must be accompanied by an abstract of 50-100 words, and a brief biography of the author of not more than 50 words. Authors are also encouraged to supply, whenever appropriate and possible, a one-page summary of their article in the language of the subject matter, to be printed with their paper. Where the language of the summary is not in Latin script (e.g., Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese) the summary should be suitable for scanning
