The aims of the ICTM are to further the study, practice, documentation, preservation and dissemination of traditional music, including folk, popular, classical and urban music, and dance of all countries.

The ICTM is an NGO (non-governmental organization) in formal consultative relations with UNESCO.

The website and online abstract submission form for the 2009 ICTM World Conference in Durban is experiencing technical difficulties. Due to this, ICTM has extended the abstract submission deadline.
