Abstract: Summary. In the early twentieth century the "myth of the primitive" served to purge the sophisticated layers of European music of some of the expressive excesses of the immediately preceding era. Arnold Schoenberg, for his part, felt constrained to consult an expert in Indian diction in connection with Pierrot Lunaire. The more recent interest of composers in musics of oral tradition, on the other hand, suggests that the written tradition no longer satisfies their expressive needs. For those concerned with fields of musical activity and inquiry where improvisation is virtually a universal practice, aleatoric principles hold few surprises. Needless to say, the "myth of the primitive" also accounts for many other aspects of modern music, including dynamics, rhythm, and sound production. But the historical ramifications reach well beyond the confines of current musical production. While certain structural and stylistic characteristics of the music of Messiaen and his disciples can hardly be understood without reference to various oriental musics, it is equally difficult to grasp what happened in the polyphony of the trecento, unless one has some knowledge of popular Italian biphony. Nor can one explain the recitatives of a Verdi in isolation from the "phonemic interrogations" of particular Italian dialects. The author suggests the organization of a special IFMC Congress devoted to the confrontation of ethnomusical cultures with the "euro-culture" of the concert hall.
